MIAMI OPEN RECAP

Sun King is Hogan

2/04/08

By Kip Henry / Hogan Circuit

If you bet on the Giants in Vegas, you made a few bucks. If you bet on someone other than The Namesake to win the 2008 Miami Open, you left the casino a little lighter in the wallet. On Sunday, Hogan bested Darryl Nash in the final round of a weekend KOB that saw the newly crowned king in control from the very first match.

MIAMI OPEN RECAP: DAY 1

Hogan had only four counterparts on Friday morning, when Greg Miller's plane was delayed by weather and his arrival shifted to late in the day. In his opening match, Hogan teamed with another tall guy in Gunnar Stapp, in an evenly fought match with Darryl Nash and Luiz Sobrinho. The decision went to Hogan/Stapp, and it would be the Namesake's first victory in an impressive day of competition. Hogan finished Friday undefeated with eight wins, four better than runner-up Stapp and in a seemingly unapproachable position as competition continued.

Gunnar Stapp, former Rookie Bachelor of the Year, was spirited in two opening matches, winning both and placing himself very much in the mix as Friday play continued. The second round of Day 1 play featured highly competitive games, and the largest margin of victory in any match was four points. Stapp was on the winning side twice more, leaving him in second place overall at 4-4. Among those trailing were Nash (3-5) and Sobrinho, who at 2-6 seemed destined for a less than average result in Miami... unless he came out strong on Day 2. And that he did.

MIAMI OPEN RECAP: DAY 2

Himself a former Rookie Bachelor, Luiz Sobrinho wanted to prove that such a distinguished honor was not a fluke. After a quality performance in the final rounds of Miami '07, Sobrinho knew that a bad first day did not mean a lost tournament. On Saturday - back on track with Greg Miller in the mix as planned - Sobrinho was on fire keeping rallies alive and patrolling behind Gunnar Stapp's block as the pair notched a 15-12 win early on Saturday. He picked up two more wins, including a wild 15-14 win with Hogan over Nash/Miller in one of the great finishes of the weekend.

Hogan and Nash, meanwhile, were running parallel throughout the afternoon. The Namesake's win streak broke in Saturday's first game, and Nash took the win. The tables turned two games later, when Hogan and Gunnar Stapp thumped Nash/Sobrinho, and at the end of the morning round all four of them had posted 3-2 records.

The day's afternoon round was a sprint to the finish, with games only up to 11. That's when Nash and Sobrinho began to make a move, and Hogan began to struggle. The firey Brazilian Sobrinho (overall finish, 9-9, 4th) broke out of the gate with three consecutive wins, and four of five, to win the afternoon round. His most amazing win came on a must-win point at 10-10 while teamed with Gunnar Stapp (see video highlights, right). Nash (overall finish 10-8, 2nd) picked up four wins as well, and Stapp (overall finish 9-9, 3rd) notched two more wins in a last minute bid to reach the finals.

Hogan, meanwhile, struggled in the lightning round with a 2-3 record but still bested all the competition with a 13-5 overall record. He and Nash would meet in Sunday's final playoff round.

MIAMI OPEN RECAP: DAY 3

The format called for a final round, even though Hogan was far and away in the lead and clearly due the title of King in Miami. In this final round, Sobrinho and Miller would serve as the additional players to fill out a final four. Nash/Sobrinho picked up a win in the first of three games, before Sobrinho/Hogan cruised to a win in game two. That left Hogan with the choice of a teammate in the decisive game. Hogan had won every match with Sobrinho over the weekend, so his choice for the finale was easy - as was the finale. The match was tight early but Hogan/Sobrinho eventually elevated their game yet again, and the title in 2008 belonged to The Namesake.

CANSECO:
"HOGAN IS IN MY NEXT BOOK"

There was a hint of controversy at South Beach on Saturday, when front runner and perennial favorite Dylan Hogan was spotted digging into a bag full of questionable materials as Day Two competition resumed.
Courtside photographers captured the indiscretion on film - images showing The Namesake sifting through clear liquids and powdered substances that may or may not be FDA approved.
"I knew it," said Gunnar Stapp from across the court. "He's the Barry Bonds of beach volleyball. He's Roger Clemens."

Steroid rock star Jose Canseco spoke with reporters Sunday night and divulged that Hogan is among up to 25 new names cited in his upcoming book. Those names include Hogan, former WWF commentator Mean Gene Okerlund, actor/personality Pauly Shore, and MTV vixen Tila Tequila.
Kip Henry was informed of the matter but offered no comment other than to say, "I'll talk to Oprah, and only Oprah."
The website TMZ.com was reporting on Monday that a small vial left behind by Hogan contained an unknown substance and was prescribed by a "G. Miller," according to the label.

KIP HENRY RIPS SPONSOR:
Never Trust A Penguin

Burgess Meredith was untrustworthy. So was Danny Devito. But when Kip Henry announced the Penguin Hotel as the host hotel in 2008, there was confidence in the pick. But as Kip arrived last week, all hell broke loose. "They were simply not up to par," Henry said afterwards. "We require friendly staff. We require excellent location. We need a hotel with an inviting bar for unwinding. The Starlite Hotel came through. We've put them on the map."

The only complaint came from Gunnar Stapp, who sent an HC intern to seek out shampoo and conditioner since it was not immediately provided. "It's about the locks," he summized. "Gunnar can't pose for Metro Magazine with frizzy hair. It's gotta be solid. It's what's called a Gunnarrequisite."

Luiz true to Sunday form

In 2007, Luiz Sobrinho returned to the Clevelander at 6am for a cat nap before a 9am first serve. This year, he stepped onto the court direct from the club scene. Arriving back on Ocean Drive at 8am after a night of dancing, he stopped only for a hearty breakfast before pulling on his board shorts and hitting the sand.

"They say that consistency is the key to success," Sobrinho said through an interpretor. "So I stayed consistently awake. It worked last year, this year, and it will work again next year. I won't have to sleep through the party at the Clevelander in 2009. I will be the party... and then I'll see you on center court."

Miller picked up for disorderly conduct

Dr. Greg Miller, thought by many to be a respectable and honorable member of the community, was detained briefly by Miami Dade Police late Saturday after a disturbance along Ocean Drive.
According to police, Miller was repeatedly asked to leave a local playground but refused to do so. Several police officers were summoned to the scene, and officers tasered the Midwest doctor before finally bringing him under control.
"While on the swing set, we had difficulty subduing him, with the kicking legs and all," said Deputy Billy Bob Jefferies. "Once he got to the slide, we were able to take him into custody."
Miller returned to the beach on Sunday.

Three in a row for Stapp

He's the toast of the town in Miami Beach when the HC Tour arrives. And once again this year, Gunnar Stapp graced the cover of Miami's Metro Magazine. It's the third time in as many years that Stapp has been the cover boy.
"There's only one way to sell magazines," Stapp said in a press conference at the Biscayne Bay Day Spa. "If Gunnar Stapp is on the cover, sales increase and subscription rates soar. Gunnar is glad he can bring joy and happiness to South Beach."

The Spire Bar hosted this year's annual HC phone moment, a conversation with San Franciscan Mark Stapp... Dr. Greg Miller did not go winless all weekend. An exhibition 3-on-3 match-up saw he, Hogan, and Nash victorious...
